While I was still in America for four days, I felt obliged to meet with all the friends and family I could possibly see and get monetarily and mentally prepared for a one month trip abroad. The mentally prepared piece was the most difficult because it required me to change my pace and start thinking critically. After spending two weeks on a cultural service trip, you'd think my thinking skills were on point- but Fulbright is another level. So I sat down and started brainstorming research topics, reflecting on my application, and reading about Bristol for the 50th time. I had no idea that my breadth of knowledge on this topic would be expanded ten-fold by renowned lecturers and simple discussions with Bristolians as well as tour guides after visits to heritage sites and museums.
But I don't want to ruin everything. So, I'll just say that small tasks like printing itineraries and reviewing important emails definitely helped me transition to another continent and university without too much culture shock. Now I know that having an open mind and being comfortable with not knowing everything about the city or the program topic would have made an even smoother transition. |
